Who can vote

    You may vote as a resident elector if you meet the requirements set out in the Local Government Act, including age, citizenship, residency, and disqualification rules. You may vote as a non-resident property elector if you meet the applicable ownership and qualification requirements under the Local Government Act.

    Voter registration

    The City of Port Alberni uses the Provincial List of Voters as the register of resident electors. If you are not already registered, you may register at the time of voting if you are eligible. You will be required to complete the necessary forms and provide identification.

    Identification

    If you are registering at the time of voting, you must provide the identification required by the Local Government Act. Non-resident property electors must also provide proof of property ownership and, if applicable, written consent from a majority of the property owners.

    Advance voting

    Required advance voting opportunities will be held on:

    • Wednesday, October 7, 2026
    • Wednesday, October 14, 2026

    General voting day

    General voting day is Saturday, October 17, 2026. Voting place locations and accessibility information will be posted here once confirmed.

     

    Mail ballot voting

    Mail ballot voting is available in accordance with City of Port Alberni Election and Assent Voting Bylaw No. 5150, 2026. Information on applying for a mail ballot package, deadlines, and return requirements is available on this page. 

    Completed mail ballot packages must be received by the Chief Election Officer before 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2026 in order to be counted.

    For Candidates

    The offices to be filled in the 2026 General Local Election are:

    • one (1) Mayor
    • six (6) Councillors

    Nomination

    Nomination documents may be filed from 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026 until 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2026.

    Nomination packages

    Nomination packages will be available from this page and from Election Headquarters at Port Alberni City Hall, 4850 Argyle Street.

    Candidate qualifications

    To be qualified to be nominated, elected, and hold office, a person must meet the requirements of the Local Government Act.

    Nominator requirements

    In accordance with City of Port Alberni Election and Assent Voting Bylaw No. 5150, 2026, the minimum number of qualified nominators is ten (10).

    Campaign financing and advertising

    Rules respecting campaign financing, campaign disclosure, elector organizations, and third party advertising are administered by Elections BC.

    Official notices for the 2026 General Local Election will be posted on this page as they are issued.

    Results

    Preliminary election results may be released after the close of voting on general voting day.

    Official election results will be declared in accordance with the Local Government Act and posted on this page.
